Black Girl Blues

 B for Bold

L for LIT

A for Ageless

C for Captivating

K for Knowledgeable

You’re sooooooo cute! What are you mixed with? Black with a little dab of awesomeness, adversity, power, a little more black, expression, some more melanin, uniqueness, your favorite meal from grandma, humility, a trillion dollars, sex appeal, and ummm black. Why am I not just an “attractive” black woman?

Lately, I’ve been getting the most awkward questions about my “Blackness”. Is that your real hair? How do you get it to curl like that? I bet you’re good at the dancing stuff, I once had a black friend, you remind me of her granddaughter, what are you mixed with? Wow, you’re married? Did I miss something? When did being a black woman disqualify you from being attractive, educated, married, and overall fucking LIT.

As black women, we face the creation of stereotypes from everyone. These assumptions portrayed in the media makes many assume what black women should act and sound like devaluing real life experiences. It’s important for us not to internalize those stereotypes that many have paraded as the truth. It's time to speak up and show the world the circumstances that we face daily. We are more than just cool hair, and “strong black women”. We are queens, mothers of humanity, intelligent, assertive but not aggressive, confident, encouraging, family-oriented, spiritual, fashionable, sexy and sensual, and sooooo much more. I can literally go on and on.  To define what it is to be a black woman is virtually impossible. We are undefinable. Cultural identity will not keep us from growing. I love who I am, I love the skin that I’m in.
